Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, is a mosque in Kampong Kiarong of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. It is named after Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th and current Sultan of Brunei. It is one of the two state mosques, the other Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah summoned John Lawson to the country’s capital, in the early 1990s after being inspired by the Englishman’s work. Lawson was asked to design the glass dome for a new mosque that would be constructed to mark the sultan’s 25th year of reign. Although it was first officially called the Kiarong Mosque, it would go on to be named after the sultan of Brunei name.
The mosque is a waqf of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The construction began in 1988 on a 20-acre site in Kiarong. The mosque was inaugurated on 14 July 1994 with the Sultan attending the Maghrib and Isha prayers in conjunction with His Majesty’s 48th birthday celebration.
